“All children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.” Pablo Picasso

Did you know that over 330 languages are spoken in the United States? English is most common at 80%, Spanish at 12%, European, Asian, and 330 others round out the last 8%. I wonder if Mumbling is one of the languages (I used to speak it fluently).

What about the language of…Art? Do you think of art as a language? It certainly is a colorful means of communicating.

At its most basic definition, language is simply communicating. Words certainly are effective, but it seems that less words equates to more creative communication. Case in point: sign language, body language, and we all know that certain hand gestures speak volumes!

Sir Ken Robinson, in a superb TED speech, said he believes that “we are educating people out of their creative capacities.” He continues- “Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status” Not doing so bears the consequence that “And the consequence is that many highly talented, brilliant, creative people think they’re not, because the thing they were good at at school wasn’t valued.”

I have experienced time and again the joy that overcomes a student- child or adult- when they come upon a truth or means of doing something that either one, they had always been told they could or should not do, or two, they never knew how or that it could be done. It’s a wonderful moment of victory, of overcoming, of conquering, of which I am privileged to be a part of.

I invite you to treat yourself to attending my ArtShops and rediscover the language of art. Experience the joy of discovery, of a beautiful way to respond to life. I believe art truly can help us see more than we ever saw before.
