Are the ArtShops designed so that you need to take all of them? We were wondering if we could just sign up for one class, maybe two?
ArtShops occur once a month, focusing on a different art technique or principle each month. Unlike math (thank goodness!), the sessions are not cumulative. You can pick and choose whatever topics you want help on. There is a 20% discount for registering for four or more sessions, but of course, that's optional.

Can I sign up to attend the workshop with my child? I'd like to learn what he's learning, and think we'll have fun doing the projects together.
Absolutely! I encourage parents to do this for a few reasons. First, it enables you to help your child continue developing their skills long after the workshop is over. Also, it can build your relationship with your child as you communicate that you value his interests. One word of caution: let your child make mistakes, and let me be the one to help him learn the proper method. This will allow you- and your son- to enjoy the workshop. If you both come to learn, you'll both have a great time!

Is there an age limit to your workshops?
Yes, workshops are geared for children ages 9 and up. There are a couple reasons for this restriction. First, the material is challenging for most kids under 9or 10 years old; secondly, I have found that generally, children under 9 years old have a difficult time staying focused through each session, and end up distracting other students.
Of course, there are always exceptions to this! I have had kids under 9 years old be exceptionally well-behaved, and I've also had much older kids lack focus and discipline! :) Best thing to do if you desire to have a younger child participate is to contact us directly (see Contact page).
Workshops consist of both group and individual instruction, so regardless of skill levels, I can meet each student where they're at in terms of experience and skill.

Are supplies included in the tuition fee?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Check the information pertinent to each particular workshop. In some cases some materials are supplied, but there may either by a small material fee for supplemental items, or you may be asked to bring along something from home (e.g. your sketchbook).
If there is anything not supplied or covered in the workshop, we'll make it known so you can be prepared. If in doubt, just ask!
-
Are the materials that you use nontoxic?
For children's workshops, we make sure that all materials are safe and nontoxic.
For teen and adult workshops, some materials are indeed toxic, such as oil paints and pastels). Tim takes the time to brief students on the proper handling of their materials. Now, this isn't a chemistry lab or a explosive-making workshop, so there are no life-threatening materials being used here, so a little common sense will keep you toxin-free.

What kind of lunches do you provide in your all-day ArtShops? My child has specific fool allergies that I need to consider.
Fool allergies? I'm allergic to fools, too, and avoid them when possible. :)
I assume you meant 'food' allergies, so I'll address that just in case. Generally, we provide a lunch of a variety of pizzas with fruit and a drink (water, juice, and soda). If your child has food allergies, it's best to either bring along a lunch from home or supply us with a note advising to restrict your child from certain types of foods (or fools). We'll do our best to keep tabs on those with food allergies, though keep in mind that we often have a lot of kids to keep in order during workshops.

May I pay at the door with a personal check instead of paying online?
Yes, but please let us know in advance that you'll be attending. We do prefer, however, that you mail in your payment ahead of time if time permits. This helps us to ensure we have ample supplies for all attending students. If you don't RSVP ahead of time, you may not have supplies reserved for pre-registered students.
Pre-register at the forms on each workshop's website page or by contacting us (see Contact page).
-
What is your refund policy?
We'll give you a refund policy up to two weeks prior to an event. If you received a coupon discount for signing up for multiple events, and canceling causes you to not meet the coupon requirements, then the difference will be deducted from your refund. However, you are welcome to apply a course fee towards another future event instead with no penalty to keep your multiple-event discount.

Why do you request that we submit the emergency contact/medical release form?
Though we've not yet had to make use of the release/contact info, we ask for the info for your child's benefit in case there was an emergency. If there is an emergency, we will do everything we can to quickly contact you; the release allows us to take care of your child in the event you cannot be reached and time is the essence.

I'd like to see my child continue developing her skills between workshops. Do you have any thoughts on how to go about this?
You bet I do! I have a lifetime of experience both as a child and as a parent (I learned much from my father, also a professional artist, and I guide my own children's creative juices).
At each workshop I hand out a "homework" sheet that summarizes the principles learned in the workshop and activities to continue practicing at home. This is a good start. The main thing I find for spurring kids' creativity is to give them the resources (materials). the encouragement (heavy on pointing out the good, gentle on constructive criticism), teach by example (sit next to them and let them SEE you do what you would like to see them try), and lastly, encourage them to see outside the box that they're currently limited by. On this last point, I don't mean to be different merely for the sake of being different, but to find new ways of expressing what they already know, and see things that they've missed seeing up to now. You can read more about this on my post "Spurring Your Child's Creativity".

Can my 12-year-old attend your Teen ArtCamp? She loves drawing and is comfortable around older kids.
I take younger kids on a case-by-case basis. If your child is able to 1) stay focused, 2) not get easily bored, and 3) is comfortable with older kids, then I say come on down! Another thing to consider, if you're interested and want to learn also, join her in the class. I have no problem having parents in the class if they can meet requirements #1 and 2 above. :)

What's the difference between your ArtShops and your ArtCamps?
Though both ArtShops and ArtCamps feature serious instruction, ArtShops are more introductory, and ArtCamps are intermediate/advanced. ArtShops are a series of one-day events that cover the fundamentals of whatever the ArtShop topic is (i.e. Drawing, Color, Painting, etc.). ArtCamps take this a step, or a few steps, further by allowing more time to develop each project. For example, we may spend three consecutive days developing a single portrait. ArtCamps are also geared towards older kids, and so the instruction is more advanced. Note: because of the individualized instruction, both options are geared to accommodate beginner to advanced students.

You say you offer scholarships/tuition assistance to your ArtShops. Can you tell me more about this?
I want every child who desires to learn to have the chance to do so. If financial hardship is the reason you cannot attend, please contact us. We ask that you pay what you are able (the $5 material fee plus however much of the tuition). No questions asked. Tim has faith that his family's needs will be met, and is thankful to have the opportunity to help when and where he can.
